Disclaimer before I begin, this is my opinion, my experiences and my rage. Everyone's entitled to their own just like your entitled to think I'm wrong.
There may be things I don't know and facts I get wrong and you spot any of that feel free to correct me. But this essentially is an angry rant about how frustrating and anger-inducing Spectre Units can be and are to deal with. When I say that I'm talking about the class itself and not the people who play them so if your a SU please do not take this as a personal attack.
On my Combine Characters, I'm a Helix and Grid and that's because I prefer playing support by healing or building. I don't like fighting as I can find CVR's COD like combat system frustrating and I'm generally not the best at it anyway. I know SU's can be annoying but I didn't realise just how much pain they could inflict upon the Combine until a few days ago. I was on my Grid doing Grid things like building defences on point G and I get killed while building big deal. But the SU that killed me then calls an admin and slaps a pack of C4 on my defences and the entire thing gets deleted. I'm sorry what they can do that? I mean I knew that had C4 for prop destruction but I guess I haven't seen them use it on general Grid defences before now, and my entire defensive lineup gets destroyed. I didn't know exactly how many props I used but I think between 5 - 9 if I had to guess.
It takes a heck of a lot longer for the dedicated demolition classes to blow up my stuff, they need to destroy everything one by one with rockets and even then it can take a while, one pack of C4 though? Snapped, it makes sense because they can destroy artillery cannons and those can use a lot of props but damn I don't find it fair that if a Heavy wants to blow stuff up he has first fight his way there and then survive long enough that his rockets can damage and then eventually destroy defences meanwhile these guys can disguise, walk up to the massive fortress you spent so long building (and likely did so under pressure of imminent attack) wait for the right moment and blow the whole thing up in one go and then go about their business like it's just another milk run.
So with everything gone, I delete the rest of my props and hop on my Helix. This is where things go from annoying to absurd. I go to the city by myself and get to point G where I have quite the medical detail. I'm healing people but then this one impatient union comes along and demands I heal him, me remembering I can't deny healing go ahead and heal him, about 5 minutes later he guns down everybody in the staircase room and opens the door for his rebel buddies who commend him for going ham.
Do you know what it feels like to heal and SU and get killed by that SU? It's like giving someone a knife and then getting stabbed with that knife, it hurts. And I can't say no to him either I'm not allowed to deny healing! This isn't the first time it's happened but it's definitely one of the worst.
Within about 5 - 10 minutes the Rebels push us out the city and cut our respawn line at point C, D and on. I get with a squad (mostly OTA) and move to point C where three Unions are already there waiting, this sets off an alarm bell since the point's still neutral but because of the rules there's nothing I can do. (Thing about SU is people are scared of calling them out because they might get thrown into a sit where the admin doesn't believe them) As an MPF I can't ID check and the one NPU that was in our squad needs a valid reason to ID check even when on the field. I guess suspicious behaviour is subject to opinion.
So we get there and a big surprise we get killed by the disguised SUs who since nobody survived or saw them do it they can go ahead and wait there doing it again and again. Time passes and I'm back to attacking the city with a squad. Time after time I'm killed in various ways that involve a SU, having a one link up with the squad in the city and then guns us all down when we have our backs to him, being sniped countless times with no idea where it came from. Oh, and the squad thing didn't just happen once or twice it happened so many times I lost count if someone suspected he was a SU they were the first to die. Get this, this part's juicy! When somebody called him out for having the SU's DMR out he said a Grid had crafted it for him!
CVR has made me angry before but has never made me so angry I shout at the top of my lungs something my mother would disapprove of...until that day.
If you're still reading this then I'd like to ask you: How many ways are there of countering SUs now? At least compared to Maces?
I don't know the rules like some people but from my perspective, there is no way you can actively hunt them down you must wait for them to make the first move which means they get all the time in the world to line up their crosshairs with your pretty little face and mow down not just you but everyone in your squad and there's no way to prevent that. Unless they die before they kill everyone. (which they will just respawn, re-disguise and go back at it)
They even now have the ability to see a string of little green lights that hint as to where a Mace has been or currently is so they will know when they're being watched and can act as a direct and even strong counter to their Combine counterparts. What class counters SU? Well, I might be wrong but everyone thinks it's NPU with it's the ability to ID check but that's not really very good because NPU need a valid reason to do it and in the heat of combat you don't really have the time. Even then people are afraid of doing it because the SU has the power to pull that person into a sit and potentially get them punished even if it was just. It's at this point I'd put my dev face on and suggest a way to balance them but now that I look at it it's not an easy task, how would you balance SU without making them so easy to deal with it becomes a joke?
Whatever happens feel free to share your thoughts if you want. I've spent like 3 hours typing about why SU makes me so damn angry so I think I'll stop here, congrats for reading this far you deserve a cookie.
damn, that sounds like my life when I play on combine lmao, I manage to kill them from time to time just because I treat everyone as a SU which is kinda sad considering that you wish to communicate with them rather than treat them as the enemy.
But regardless mace are the same thing, like quite literally exact same (but worse cause they are invis) they are just less active compared to SU so I guess it will depend on rules that possibly could add up some less problems for the combine.
O and you can random id check pretty much anyone except civilians.

Then would you kindly tell me where in the rules it says that? On my Grid I tried to ID check a union that got a little close to my Artillery for comfort and got pulled into a sit for it then was given a verbal warning.
Oh yea that's another thing! Some players are too scared of being pulled into a sit for messing with an SU so they just let them do their thing! I've heard of players getting pulled into a sit because the SU called bullshit when somebody they didn't see sees them kill combine. smh
