This is more daydreaming than a suggestion, cuz I doubt this level of change would ever get out of paper, but fuck it we ball.
A lot of the recent discussions (past 2 months) have either pointed fingers at REAPER or HECU, which isn't surprising since Combines don't have something like HECU, and Rebels don't have something like REAPER
Therefore, people often complain about their strengths, because they have nothing similar to use.
So I propose the following!
Create a new rebel class, with 700HP and some weapon appropriate called "R&D HEV", justifying the healthpool with the fact they'd be wearing an HEV suit, and placing it under R&D since the HEV suit is black mesa techonology, so it just makes sense.
And revive PHANTOM from the ashes to OTA, giving combine mains the opportunity to play a class like HECU (AR + Shotgun combo) for the Combine side.
As for weapons, M680 is already a shotgun that exists in Combine kits, so just give 'em that, and for an AR, give them the SA87 and tweak it's stats so it behaves like an AR instead of an LMG (which is what it's categorized as in the weapon list)
And then instead of Grenades like HECU, give them Flashbangs like they used to have, that both gives PHM and HECU differences in kit, limiting their similarities to their kit (AR + M680 + Equipment)
How would this benefit the server? A:
There is a great taboo revolving the topic of "class equivalency", but fact of the matter is that it exists for the majority of classes. And while they're not the exact same class, they have the same role and weapon kit
A few examples:
--> SWORD and LVET Assault: Both are CQC specialists with Auto/Semi-Auto shotguns
--> SHIELD and LVET Commando: Both have shields and LMGs, in fact SHIELD only changed from ECHO to SHIELD in order to give combines a Shield + LMG class, thus proving their equivalency
--> RANGER and SNP: Both have Snipers and Slams
--> CROSS and LVET Marskman: Both have DMRs + ClimbSWEP (with CROSS having Thermal as the differential)
--> SENTRY and MP HVY: Both hailing from the "law enforcement" division (MP and NPU), using a powerful LMG with tactical equipment (Gas Nades / Deployable Shield) (Obs: Not saying the tactical equipment is equivalent in usage, but fact of the matter is that they are tactical equipment)
--> RIOT and RU: Shield + Shotgun class
I could go on, but I believe I've made my point.
Out of the classes that "kinda have an equivalent but not really", HECU and EOW stand out the MOST because they have nothing even similar on the other side.
For one, HECU used to be Phantom's equivalent back before OSS was introduced, and after PHM was removed, EOW became the equivalent until they broke the equivalency, getting more HP and AR2 in exchange for deployment rules etc etc
So now we have this situation where, rebels often complain about REAPERs, and combines complain about HECUs, for a variety of reasons, but I believe that if both sides had their own version of that class to aid them, this issue would be GREATLY mitigated if not outright solved.
I don't think adding PHANTOM would stop RF PVT ItSmellsLikeAlmonds from complaining about EOW, if anything they'll have YET ANOTHER asshole they can't consistently beat to worry about. Same way goes for UNION 09 18490184771267249575 (the numbers he picked were taken and he just gave up) with HEV.
Don't mind fighting the odd juggernaught or eowa since they're usually quite rare but adding more 500hp+ classes when the servers already so saturated with them isn't going to make the bullet spongey feel of the game any better
I enjoy the idea of a rebel equivalent, but I'd rather both EOW and the possible new HEV equivalent be reduced to a more reasonable HP like, 550. Bullet sponge gameplay like mentioned, is not fun.
Eh I think this might just make the server even more saturated with tanky units for no reason. I think we should wait for the stat update before we recommend anything new.
